How cover-ups work

Cover-ups aren’t about “hiding” a tattoo with a thin layer. The best cover-ups use:

  • Stronger contrast and shading

  • Clever composition (where the old tattoo becomes part of the new design)

  • The right sizing (often slightly larger than the original)

What we need from you

For the best advice, we’ll need:

  • A clear photo in good lighting (better still, pop into the studio)

  • Approximate size

  • Location on the body

  • Any ideas/styles you like (realism, traditional, colour, etc.)

The Cover-up process

  1. Send us a photo of what you currently have (try to ensure good lighting and take a few photos from multiple angles.
Even better and the preferred option; pop into the studio so we can have a good look in person.

  2. We will then go over the design options + sizing with you. We want your coverup to look more like a new tattoo so we will advise the best options to ensure little to now 'show through' of your old tattoo.

  3. If needed, we will recommend laser lightening to lighten (and in some cases, almost completely erase your old tattoo) to give you more options and much better finished piece.

  4. When you're happy with everything we'll get you booked in for the required number of sessions to complete the work and deposit(s) will be taken to secure your appointment(s)

  5. after your tattoo, we'll go over all of the Aftercare + touch-ups guidance required.

When laser might help

Sometimes a few laser sessions can open up more design options—especially if the existing tattoo is very dark or dense. We’ll be honest about what will give you the best result.

We’re based at 1 West Street, Rochford, Essex, SS4 1BE, welcoming clients from Rochford and across Essex (including Southend-on-Sea, Rayleigh and Hockley).

Some Cover-Up FAQ's

Do you do cover-up tattoos at Good As Gold Tattoos?
Yes — we design cover-up tattoos in our Rochford studio for clients across Essex.

Can any tattoo be covered up (including dark tattoos)?
Most can, but very dark, dense, or large tattoos may need a bigger design or laser lightening first. We’ll be honest about the best route once we’ve seen what you’re working with.

Would laser treatment help before a cover-up tattoo?
In most cases yes. Laser sessions can lighten an existing tattoo and give you more cover-up options—especially if the current tattoo is very dark, dense, or has heavy black areas. It can allow for a wider choice of styles, cleaner results, and sometimes a smaller cover-up design. If you’re unsure, pop into the studio or send a clear photo and we’ll tell you honestly whether laser would help for your specific tattoo.

Do cover-ups have to be bigger than the original tattoo?
Usually, yes. More space gives more options to disguise the old tattoo properly.

What styles work best for cover-ups?
Designs with stronger shading/contrast often work best — realism and traditional/neo-traditional are common choices. Colour can work well in some cases too, depending on the existing tattoo. Fine line is usually not ideal for heavy cover-ups.

Can you cover up a name tattoo?
Most of the time, yes — send a photo or pop into the studio and we’ll suggest realistic options.

Can you rework a tattoo instead of fully covering it?
Yes — sometimes a rework/refresh is the better option. We’ll advise after seeing a photo.

Will the old tattoo show through the cover-up over time?
A well-designed cover-up should hold up well, but all tattoos age. We’ll plan it carefully to minimise any show-through as it heals and over time.

How should I look after my new Cover Up?
Aftercare is key here...we offer full aftercare instructions and products to ensure your new cover up tattoo heals perfectly and looks incredible.

What’s the first step to start a cover-up in Rochford?
Best option is to pop into the studio so we can take a good look. If that’s not possible, send a clear photo in good lighting, the approximate size, the placement, and what styles you like — then we’ll guide you on sizing, style direction, and next steps.

Is fine line a good option for a cover-up?
Usually not for heavy cover-ups. Fine line can work for light reworks, but most cover-ups need stronger elements.
